- PostArtins förmodan: p-adiska tal, ändliga kroppar och ekvationer utan heltalslösningar(2019) Karlsson, Alexander; Wahl, Kajsa; Klyver, Markus; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesThis paper is based on Artin's conjecture concerning homogeneous polynomial equations. The conjecture is false in general but it is still true in many cases. One of our goals is to motivate why the conjecture is formulated the way it is. Moreover, we present a counterproof to the conjecture and we prove the conjecture in one specific case. We construct the p-adic numbers as the conjecture is expressed in terms of p-adic numbers and we introduce theory on finite fields, as it is needed in the motivation of the conjecture, the counterproof and in the proof of the specific case.
- PostAtt mäta SVT-program(2019) Brandby, Johan; Wennerblom, Julia; Andersson, Stina; Gardell, Therese; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesThe purpose of this study is to examine whether or not the concept of informational advantage in series has a correlation with the popularity of the series. Informational advantage as a dramaturgical tool means that the viewer, at any given point throughout the series, either knows more, less or the same amount as the character in the show; these stages are called dramatic irony, mystery, and suspence respectively. Three different questions were examined. The time spent in one stage before switching to the next is examined with an Anderson-Darling test to see if it fits any statistical distribution, and if there is a difference between series with high and low viewership numbers. The conclusion is that it cannot be rejected that the time follows a log-normal distribution and that the expected time a program will spend in one stage before switching is shorter in programs with high viewership numbers. Furthermore, whether the total percentage of time spent in the different stages has a linear relationship with the viewership numbers is examined with linear regression using the method of least squares. With the collected data it was difficult to make a definitive conclusion, however the data implies that the relationship is stronger for the time spent in dramatic irony and viewership numbers, than the relationship for mystery. The relationship is especially stronger for the online viewership. Lastly it is examined whether the percentage of switches between the different states has a linear relationship with the viewership numbers, also with the method of least squares. The result points towards switches between dramatic irony and suspence correlating positively with viewership, while switches between mystery and suspence seem to correlate negatively with viewership.

- PostDigital Filter Design Using Semidefinite Programming(2014) Johansson, Jimmy; Samuelsson, Moa; Samuelsson, Fabian; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesAbstract This thesis explores an optimization based approach to the design problem of digital filters. We show how a digital filter in the form of a discrete linear time-invariant causal system can be characterized by a non-negative trigonometric polynomial, which in turn can be represented by a positive semidefinite matrix known as Gram matrix representation. This allows us to utilize the framework of linear conic optimization, especially semidefinite programming to obtain filters based on given specifications and optimal with respect to some property of the filter. The optimization is carried out with respect to minimizing the stopband energy as well as the passband ripple. We cover both FIR and IIR filters. The model is implemented in MATLAB using the modelling language CVX and solved using SeDuMi.
- PostEn kvantitativ modell för Cdc42 under påverkan av ROS i polariseringsfasen hos S.Cerevisiae(2017) Björk, Anton; Larsson, Julia; Svedberg, Patrik; Limeta, Angelo; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesCan a reduction of oxygen radicals prolong life? In this bachelor thesis, the impact of reactive oxygen species, abbreviated ROS, on the protein Cdc42 is studied using mathematical modelling. Cdc42 is active during polarization in yeast cells, which creates asymmetry in the cell before division. Research indicates that ROS is a contributing factor to ageing and can damage both DNA and proteins. It has also been shown that the polarization process is less efficient in older cells. Cdc42 is a protein in yeast with homology in humans. Conclusions from experiments in yeast can therefore shed light on similar mechanisms in humans. Three models of increasing complexity, consisting of systems of differetial equations, for Cdc42 under the impact of ROS were developed. Existing experimental data have been used in parameter estimation. Among other relevant parameters, the levels of damaged Cdc42 were estimated. To get a deeper insight regarding parameter estimation, an in-house routine has been created using MATLAB. The parameters have also been estimated in the systems biology software Copasi. The results show that at least two of the three models are able to simulate the concentration distribution of Cdc42 during polarisation and that ROS has a negligible impact on Cdc42 during this period of time. The in-house routine in MATLAB can perform parameter estimations on models with few parameters but gives misleading results when applied to models with many parameters. The conclusion that ROS has little impact on Cdc42 does not come as a surprise. However, there is a lot in the developed models that can be improved to make them more reliable. A thorough investigation of the identifiability of the model parameters is needed if the ODE systems should be further developed. The reason that the in-house program is unable to estimate the parameters of the more complicated models is lack of programming time. With a few modifications, the program should be able to perform more complicated parameter estimations.
- PostFinite Hypergroups and Their Representation Theory(2017) Moberg, John; Sjögren, Joel; Franzén, Björn; Breitholtz, Adam; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesA hypergroup is an algebraic structure generalizing the concept of a group. This is done by adding a sense in which the multiplication can be interpreted as probabilistic by letting the operation range over an algebra. This leads to weakening the requirement of invertibility that we have for ordinary groups. While hypergroups have been studied in full generality, finite hypergroups are an interesting special case which can be dealt with by more elementary methods. In this report we restrict ourselves to finite hypergroups and develop the representation theory of hypergroups by trying to generalize the well-known representation theory of finite groups. While many proofs transfer immediately, some proofs that depend on the invertibility of group elements must be modified. We prove the Schur orthogonality relations for hypergroup representations, and establish character orthogonality. Finally, we restrict ourselves to commutative finite hypergroups and prove some interesting results about such objects. This naturally leads to the development of Fourier analysis on finite hypergroups, using similar techniques as in the finite group case. In the appendices we consider several examples of hypergroups coming from finite groups and distance-transitive graphs. All of these hypergroups are commutative, and therefore the entire body of results apply to them.
- PostFokuserad uppvärmning av hjärnan med hypertermi(2019) Nygren, Andrea; Jonasson, Rebecca; Bertolino, Erik; Pixsjö, Helena; Ytterell, Anthon; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesCombining radiation or chemotherapy with hyperthermia has been shown to be an effective way to improve cancer treatments. This project has investigated which temparature is obtainable when using focused heating on cancer tumors. The tumor used in the project is a deep-seated medulloblastoma in a child model. Tumor coverage and hot spots have been considered. Electromagnetic fields were simulated on the model and the results were optimized using a goal function. The results show a certain heating of the deep-seated tumor, but with hot spots and very low coverage of the tumor. Different goal functions used for optimization were also examined, along with methods of optimization. These results indicated that Nelder-Mead is a better method of optimization than particle swarm for this case and that the new goal function HTC25 gave equivalent results as the commonly used HTQ.
- PostFörskjutning av döden kring födelsedagen(2019) Lazaroo, Lucas; Andreeva, Natalia; Farooqi, Furqan; Ingemarsson, Ingrid; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesIn this thesis we adress a hypothesis that suggests that people can postpone their imminent death (given natural causes). The so-called "Postponement hypothesis" assumes that a meaningful occasion can act as a motivator to prolong life for a short amount of time. We consider a persons birthday as that meaningful occasion and analyze the hypothesis around this date by using tools from a statistical discipline known as Survival analysis. If the hypothesis is true it can be expected that the mortality rate should be lower a period before a person's birthday and, perhaps, higher shortly afterwards. We choose to set this period to a limit of 14 days. This would indicate that there is a force which postpones death for the population concerned. The datasets used in analysis are mortality data over people who lived to be Supercentenarian and Italian people who became older than 105 years, and also primarily a dataset for South African people who died in the year 2015. The mortality rate is summarised by hazard functions, which at each age expressed in days describes the dying rate of people who survived to this day. We thereafter apply various parametric models to the hazard, in order to discover any discrepancy around the birthdays. For this a t-test is conducted on the mean of the residuals mortality in the birthday period, to see if the mean is non-zero. This should be the case if the days around the birthdays are no different in terms of mortality rate compared to other days of the year. The results of our analysis show that no postponement of death can be seen for the examined dataset. Instead the data suggest that the mortality rate is actually higher both before and after the birthday. Speculations as to why this is the case might be a higher risk associated with the stress of preparing for the birthday.
- PostGleasons sats(2019) Karmstrand, Therese; Ulander, Johan; Landgren, Lorents; Lidell, David; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesThis paper aims to present Gleason’s theorem and a full proof, by the most elementary methods of analysis possible. Gleason’s theorem is an important theorem in the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics. It characterizes measures on closed subspaces of separable Hilbert spaces of dimension at least 3. The theorem can be formulated in terms of so-called frame functions. It states that all bounded frame functions, on the specified Hilbert spaces, must have the form hAx, xi, for some self-adjoint operator A. The theorem is proved by first proving the statement in R3, through mostly geometric arguments on the unit sphere, and methods relating to convergence of sequences. It is then shown that this implies the theorem in general Hilbert spaces of higher dimension. The bulk of our proof follows the ideas of Cooke, Keane and Moran [2] with some own additions and clarifications in order to make it more accessible and correct. A lemma of single-variable analysis has been expanded, an oversight in the proof of the geometric lemma 5 (Piron) has been fixed and an erroneous topological argument has led to the much rewritten proposition 2 about extremal values of frame functions. The motivation for the sufficiency of the proof in R3 for higher-dimensional Hilbert spaces follows the ideas of the original proof by Andrew M. Gleason.
- PostHata Slumpen.
- PostIcke-standardanalys. En introduktion och en jämförande studie med tillämpningar inom komplexanalys och finansiell matematik.(2012) Berneryd, Lina; Ekdahl, Victor; Jedvert, Magnus; Paulander, Oskar; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical Sciences
- PostKlassifikation av polygoner med trigonometriska egenfunktioner till Laplaceoperatorn under Dirichletrandvillkor(2019) Nordell, Henrik; Thim, Oliver; Blom, Max; Vahnberg, Jack; Chalmers tekniska högskola / Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper; Chalmers University of Technology / Department of Mathematical SciencesWe consider the eigenstructure of the Laplace operator on triangles with the angles (60°, 60°,60°); (30°, 60°,90°) och (45°, 45°,90°). Using the earlier work by M. Práger (1998) and M. A. Pinsky (1980) we find eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show completeness of eigenfunctions in L2 for each triangle. Moreover, we present a result by Brian J. McCartin (2008) that classifies which polygons have a complete set of trigonometric eigenfunctions. These polygons are the triangles mentioned above, the rectangle and the square. We connect McCartins result to symmetries of lattices, crystals and Weyl groups. In 1980 Pierre H. Bérard studied the connection between different types of eigenfunctions and symmetries and proved that all alcoves of Weyl groups have trigonometric eigenfunctions. We point out the fact that in R2 the converse is also true. That is, all polygons with a complete set of trigonometric eigenfunctions are alcoves.
