This thesis deals with the traditional and more than 100 years old Dar-house in the city of Fez. The city is heritage listed, located in the northern Morocco and consists of old buildings, built very close together that form an interacting unit. Most of the traditional homes in Fez are facing major challenges now with the increasing comfort requirements of the modern man. A growing trend is to "restore" and transform these traditional courtyard houses to guesthouses, hotels, restaurants or just for personal use. However while restoring, it’s generally common to significant disruption to the house and using not sustainable climate devices. To solve these problems, major restorations and remodeling are needed for the Dar-house. While doing this, it’s really important to understand the essence of the city, culture, construction, design and especially the interaction between housing and home. Our purpose is to bring in more understanding of the city Fez and its traditional houses, and explore alternative solutions that can be done to achieve a higher level of comfort in winter, while restoring the Dar-house and its cultural value. By studying the city and its constructions with interviews, literature and field studies we could conclude that the Dar-house needs above all to seal all air flow leaks in the house, to achieve a relatively comfortable inside climate during winter. To further increase the comfort it requires a higher indoor temperature, which could be achieved by applying solar panels and electricity. If combined with theoretical 50 mm insulation the calculation shows that the energy demand would be cut in half.
