Sammanfattning
This bachelor thesis has the purpose to investigate the hazards of the Northeast Passage from an insurance perspective, where the insurance company will insure a ship that is designed to sail in or through the Northeast Passage. We have used us of qualitative methods to collect primary data for the report and have been done through semi-structured interviews. Interviews have taken place with the relevant organizations and authorities relating Northeast Passage risks. In order to determine the risks involved with the Northeast Passage, the ship owner and the insurer must due a risk assessment of the risks faced when the ship is sailing through the Northeast Passage. The needs that need to be evaluated are the risk factors that can affect the ship and ultimately the insurance company. One of the most common risks is the weather; the different weather condition will affect the trip, like storms, winds and temperature. But above all, who does the ice situation look like through the passage. Ice is one of the more significant risks that the ship owner must be prepared for, but most importantly how to lower the risk when to sail in ice condition areas without getting damage to the ship or get stuck in the ice. It could also be that you encounter an accident and as a result of the accident it becomes a major rescue operation instead. This means that you must know what kind of infrastructure that is available in the area in order to get assistance in time. Because the Northeast Passage is located in an excluded part of the world, that has a much neglected infrastructure, both in terms of ports and the possibility of towing assistance or getting the right spare parts in time. To minimize the risk in the passage the ship owner needs to have updated weather maps and ice maps. The vessel must have the right ice class to pass throw the thickness of the ice in the area. Icebreaker assistance in convoys is seen to reduce the risk from running on or get trapped in the ice. The icebreaker can also help if an accident accurse. In terms of infrastructure, the government has to invest in tugs and rescue helicopters to rescue the ship and crew / passengers in an emergence situation. The insurer must also determent what type of equipment that is available in the area in order to collect and take care of an oil spill. What kind of equipment that needs to be available in the area depends entirely on the oil's properties and can be either be skimmers, disperents or burning of the oil. The advantages of investing in updated charts and weather maps reduces the risk of grounding or an accident and allows the premium for the insurer to be held at a reasonable level . If you have the right ice class and trained crew that can sail in ice condition with an ice-breaker it could almost lower the risk to nothing.
