Sammanfattning
Piracy and armed robbery attacks against vessels is an issue for many subjects within the shipping industry. In this thesis paper the shipping owners’ solutions for how to deal with the issue of piracy, is in focus. More specifically, the actions taken by ship owners in order to prevent pirate attacks and armed robbery or to prevent the success of the attack are highlighted within this paper. The main action considered in the thesis paper is the Citadel. The Citadel is a shelter constructed on the ship and it serves as a safe haven for the crew when the vessel is under attack. In the thesis paper, the ship owners’ usage of the Citadel as well as their opinions on this measure is examined. Whether or not the Citadel is an effective and successful measurement is also investigated. In order to implement the above study, a literature study and qualitative interviews were conducted. The thesis papers results show that ship owners use Citadels on vessels that sail through the coast of Somalia because this territory is considered being a high risk-area for piracy attacks. The results also show that it is common to locate the Citadel in the vessels engine room. Furthermore, the ship owners’ positive outlook on the usage of the Citadel is displayed by the thesis paper results. According to the investigation, which was carried out throughout the paper, the ship owners’ positive opinion on the usage of the Citadel is valid since it has proven itself to be a successful measure in practice. This thesis paper is written in Swedish.
