Sammanfattning
Bilge water is the accumulation of water on board vessels containing impurities such as petroleum products, chemicals and solid particles. International Maritime Organization(IMO) has through MARPOL developed laws governing how the bilge water must be treated in order to allow discharge overboard. The law requires that vessels with a gross tonnage of 400 or more must have approved equipment for bilge water separation on board. There are various principles to separate bilge water. This study deals with the flocculation principle and centrifugal principle. The purpose of this research is to find which operational differences from an operators point of view there are between these two principles and if these differences affects the use of the equipment. To be able to answer the research question, relevant background information has been gathered by studying the laws and regulations, process descriptions from manufacturers, articles and earlier reports that relate to the topic. Interviews with employees from two companies that are carefully selected as representatives of each principle and manufacturer of bilge water separators that comply with these principles have been implemented to complement the theory in the background. The material from the interviews has also been used to analyze the results. To reach the operators that make up the selection group a survey form was developed and sent to the engine officers on board seven vessels in a specific shipping company. The questionnaire asked how the operators are experiencing the operation and what their opinions on the operation of the two principles for bilge water separation are. The study presents that the differences in the amount of supervision and procedures during startup and shutdown, supervision during daily operation and the need for chemicals for processes are affecting the operation and that these in turn affect the working of the bilge water separators. The results and analysis of the operational differences and how they affect the use of the bilge water separators is discussed in the report.
