Sammanfattning
An AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) vessel is a type of ship intended to perform multiple offshore operations. The diversified operations place a high demand on the propulsion system for the ship. Anchor handling is the main task which demands a high amount of pulling power of the ship, also called bollard pull. To achieve a high bollard pull a high amount of propulsion power is needed. However the great variety of tasks will generate in some cases a lack of need for the total propulsion power. Traditionally a diesel mechanical propulsion system has been the most common propulsion alternative. However the diversified operation profile of the ship in combination with diesel mechanical propulsion tends in some cases to unessentially high fuel consumption. A high fuel consumption results in high costs and increased environmental impact. The oil companies’ focus on decreasing costs and environmental impact has contributed to an increased interest for the fuel consumption issues. A solution to meet the problem is to use a diesel hybrid propulsion system which contributes to decreased fuel consumption. The questions in the study shall answer what ship owners, operating AHTS-vessels with hybrid propulsion in the north western European area, experience and impression about hybrid propulsion in regard to fuel consumption and competiveness. To answer those questions background information has been compiled from specialist literature and scientific articles around the subject. Further on there have been interviews carried out with ship owners that operate AHTS-vessels with hybrid propulsion. The study proves that the ship owners are positive to the hybrid propulsion system. Advantages as lower fuel consumption and higher competiveness has been proven compared to similar ships with diesel mechanical propulsion. However the complexity and the cost of the hybrid propulsion system are proven to be a disadvantage. Another aspect that appeared in the research is that it is important that the hybrid propulsion system is to be correctly operated in able to get an effective output.
