A popular work method in the manufacturing industry is Lean Production, here after referred to as lean. Most of the research done about lean and its effect on the work environment are focused on the manufacturing industry (Hasle, et al., 2012). It is therefore hard to predict the effects lean might have in other sectors such as the maritime industry. The lacking research on lean within the maritime industry makes it interesting to investigate the effects port of Södertälje has experienced in their work with lean, this is also the main purpose of this report. Interviews with persons related to port of Södertälje and a survey of the employees’ experience of their work environment has been carried out to find the information needed to answer the following questions: how did port of Södertälje proceed while implementing lean, how they work with lean, what work environment effects they have and how they are to proceed with their lean work. The implementation of lean in port of Södertälje has been quite successful. By involving the employees in the process and at the same time stress the importance of work environment has led to that the port of Södertälje has managed to minimize the negative effects. The priority of work environment had already started before the implementation of lean since port of Södertälje had already certified their work environment. This makes it hard to distinguish which improvements have been done as a part of their work with lean and which derive from the certification. It is however clear that the work method promote the improvement of work environment. The biggest challenge in their work with lean is to improve the feedback to the workers. If not improved the will to make suggestions for improvement might decline which also would affect the work with lean in a negative way.
