Sammanfattning
This study explores the possibilities to improve the energy efficiency on passenger ships by utilizing more of the energy flow in the form of waste heat on board. The energy flow that are studied are both energy from the cooling water system and the exhaust gas boiler that produce steam for heating. The reason why these energy flows are interesting is that today, they are not fully utilized and that in the future there might be a need to use these energy flows to a greater extent in order to cope with future expected increases of the fuel price. When many ships now have to change fuel from HFO to MGO that doesn´t need heating, even more waste heat energy will be available. The opportunities for using waste heat as studied, is to accumulate the heat in a ballast tank, and also to use waste heat in an absorption cooling pump. The study is a case study onboard the vessel Stena Scandinavica. Stena Scandinavica was considered a suitable object for this case study because of the port stay of 10 hours they have every day on the current route between Gothenburg and Kiel. Therefore there is a possibility of big savings when introducing the investigated systems onboard. It has been proven that it can be profitable to both use a heat storage tank and to use waste heat in an absorption cooling pump. The study indicates that savings of about 1 360 000 SEK per year might be feasible. However with expected fuel price increase and the request to change of fuel quality in January 2015, this leads to even greater savings potential in the future. The problems with usage of an absorption cooling pump remains because of the motion of the sea that makes the process difficult to adjust. There is also a problem with using a ballast tank as an accumulator tank because of the limit in height of this type of tanks, which is preferred in an accumulator tank to create layering of the temperature in the tank. The motion of the sea can also cause problems to the layering of the temperature in the accumulator tank.
