At the turn of 2014/2015 new regulations took place regarding sulphur dioxide emissions in the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA). Sulphur dioxide contributes to acidification and is harmful to health, it is formed during the combustion process and is released in the atmosphere by the exhaust gases. The SECA, which includes the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the English Channel has a limit of 0,1 weight percent sulphur in the fuel. Decreased from the previous 1,0 percent in affect since 2010. To meet the new regulations a majority of the ships are changing fuel. As a result of the difference in price, the transition has not been done before. The alternative fuels are viscous at lower temperatures and there do not require heating. The change of fuel has led to the ability to recover energy for other purposes. The interest in energy efficiency and increased environmental awareness is the basis of the questions in this study. This case study is investigating the possibilities of energy optimizing a ship through the implementation of a Wet Steam Turbine system. The technology is intended to be a part of a steam power system with the purpose of producing electricity from waste heat. A Wet Steam Turbine is a specially designed steam turbine that runs on wet steam and are therefore different in comparison to a conventional steam turbine. The result shows that 15 percent of the total amount of a yearly diesel electric energy production can be saved through the system. The study also indicates on a significant reduction of emissions by carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide.
