Sweden is one of the major exporting countries of wooden products. It is estimated that closer to a 175 000 people in Sweden is working directly or indirectly in the industry. Paper is one of the main products that arise from the forest industry. However, the industry is facing challenges, the demand for paper is declining, both domestically and internationally. The lower growth means that companies are being forced to make strategically changes in their operative work. The Swedish paper production and export has decreased due to shutting down of machines in the paper mills as an effect of today’s market. There are outer factors that have an effect on the industry such as increasing propulsion costs for the sea leg as a result of the implementation of the new Sulphur Emission Control Area regulations, SECA. Stora Enso, one of the major companies in the forest industry has just recently changed from Gothenburg as their main port (base port) to Zeebrügge (4S). This report investigates the strategically benefits that strives the company to make such changes. The report will be limited to port of Gothenburg and port of Zeebrügge as well as the changes in the paper industry in Sweden. To work dynamically and being able to Combine cargo slots with own base cargo of paper products, and third party cargo onboard the vessels to lower transport costs for the paper has proven to be one of the keys to success as well as the new freight corridor between Zeebrügge, Belgium and Tilbury, England, which has arose from the new 4S system.
