This report is a study over the different career paths taken by the persons with a degree in nautical science from 2004. The purpose of the study is to find out if they are working with what they are trained to do or if they have chosen another line of work. What does the career paths look like now when it is over ten years since they graduated? What career paths are available in the field of commercial shipping? What career paths are available in the rest of the shipping industry? How big is the need to complement a professional degree with other academic studies to boost the career? In order to find this out a questionnaire was sent out to 37 persons with registered residence in Sweden. This was complemented by five semi structured interviews for personal input and opinions. The result from the questionnaire shows that 82 % of the persons responding to it works in commercial shipping and have been since they graduated. Half of them have reached an authorization class I and all but one person believe they have a senior position. Three quarters believes it to be easy to rise through the ranks at sea. One third combines their work at sea with a land job and out of that one third 80 % works in the shipping industry. Close to half of these consider going a shore full time and primary reason for this is family. Those persons who are not working at sea today have all been working at sea at one time after they graduated but have now chosen not to. Here three quarters have also chosen another line of work. Three quarters do think that their degree in nautical science have been useful for their career a shore. They think it’s harder to advance to a higher level and no one thinks they have a senior position at work. Here half still have authorization class V. Only 15 % of the people answering the questionnaire have continued with their studies. Most of the others have no desire to ever do so. The interviews confirm that all started working at sea straight after graduation. And none has come across any obstacle in their professional career. Except for those obstacles set up by themselves, like not wanting to be away from their family for too long. Most have followed the plans they had when they graduated and most have reached their goals. Only one of the interviewed has studied further. The common opinion is that they think the future for Swedish maritime officers looks bleak.
