Abstract: Design of a seat-based wireless ticketing system for an efficient passenger control process Innovative Projects Sweden AB has commissioned the development of a prototype in order to investigate if there is a market for a new kind of ticketing system. A train-based ticketing system, where each seat handles its own passenger check-ins. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to create a prototype of the system, which could improve the process of validating tickets on trains by reducing train attendant workload and by focusing attendant work tasks on illegal passengers. This report shows how this prototype for validating tickets is developed. The prototype is built with components from Arduino, Adafruit and Digi. A hand-held device in the form of an Android smartphone is used as an interface for the train attendants to allow for an efficient and easy way to monitor the train and the passengers. The prototype communicates in two ways, firstly via the Zigbee protocol and then via Bluetooth to the smartphone. This thesis results in a prototype that meets the goals of the project. In conclusion, a system like this could give train attendants the added functionality that is requested by the thesis. The system also provides added security when validating passenger ticket credentials.
