The report is written as a case study containing semi-structured interviews with shipping companies and ports that operate on the Swedish east coast. Interviews were conducted with the purpose to obtain possible solutions to how reliability of goods transported in containers can be increased on the Swedish east coast. In this report “reliability” is defined as goods arriving on time. The interviews have been used to investigate which difficulties shipping companies and ports may experience during the winter period in Sweden and if any measures have been, or are to be, taken to reduce these difficulties. The study is limited to feeder vessels with a cargo capacity of 800-1500 TEUs. According to Christopher Pålsson, container export on the Swedish East Coast began in the 1980s when pre-fabricated houses were being shipped to Japan. Since then the volume of goods exported from the Swedish east coast has steadily increased. During the winter period areas of the Baltic Sea are covered with ice. The area covered by ice varies from year to year and therefore becomes an uncertainty factor for shipping companies and ports. The result in this study shows that the most prominent difficulty that arises is that vessels and goods become covered by ice during the sea voyage, which goes on to suggest that the ice covering the vessels needs to be removed either manually or by melting the ice. Alternatively the goods will be rolled and loaded on the next vessel that arrives since the ice makes the vessel heavier and restricts the draught of the vessel. Other difficulties that the study shows are sight restrictions and strong winds. In the study the authors come to the conclusion that difficulties can be reduced by effective ice removal and well planned loop-schedules.
