Sammanfattning
Slow steaming has over the past years become an increasingly common way for shipping companies to increase fuel economy and lower the environmental impact of their ships. However, it has shown over the years that just simply reducing the power output does not come without consequences. Ship operation below optimal engine load does come with problems such as higher specific fuel consumption, incomplete combustion and a reduced efficiency of for example the turbocharger and the exhaust gas boiler, if they are not retrofitted correctly. The study should answer how engine manufacturers, turbocharger manufacturers and exhaust gas boiler manufacturers believe that their systems are affected by low load operation and what solutions and recommendations they provide for optimization in the low load range. Relevant background information has been put together from science articles, course literature and technical papers to provide support for the questions. Interviews have been carried out with people from three companies, one manufacturer for each of the components or systems in question. A qualitative case study was chosen to get detailed opinions and facts about the topic. Because the sample group is small a qualitative method was chosen to give a detailed and nuanced description about the subject. The interviews can be considered as semi-structured, questionaries’ were prepared to give support for the interviews and there was opportunity for reformulation and follow up questions. The study shows that turbo and boiler manufacturers agree about certain problems that could arise while slow steaming, where soot layers, lower efficiency and more frequent maintenance are the most common problems. The respondents from the engine manufacturer don’t believe slow steaming is a problem for their engines, and consider their engines to be stable down to 10 % MCR, while still offering retrofits for slow steaming operation. The result also presents if there is any exchange of information with other manufacturers regarding slow steaming and technical solutions.
