There are strong incentives to investigate alternative fuels that can replace the fossil fuels that are currently used. The incentives come from international environmental requirements where national strategies have been developed to achieve lower emissions of hazardous gases and particles. The Swedish government has commissioned its authorities and governmental offices to reduce its climate impact. This will affect the road-ferries operated by “Färjerederiet”. This study examines the conditions for compressed biogas and biomethane operations at Hönöleden. Höneleden is currently the largest route seen to emissions and thus has the greatest potential to reduce emissions. The study is based on a method combination with elements of case study and grounded theory. Calculation models have been developed around Hönöleden's current operating scenario for biogas and biomethane in compressed form as an alternative fuel. Consumption volumes at different pressures and temperatures have been established to calculate bunkering times to determine if a suitable dimensioned bunkering plant can be obtained. The study has found that it is possible to use biogas and biomethane as an alternative fuel for Hönöleden’s ferries where it is recommended to use biomethane as it contains more energy in relation to its volume. It has also been found that it is possible to have reasonable bunkering times if the bunkering system has a higher mass flow than the conventional systems used for other vehicles. To achieve recommended mass flow and reliability, a parallel-linked bunkering system would be preferred because it both increases the redundancy and reliable operations.
