Sammanfattning
The background of this Bachelor Thesis is optimizing the efficiency in gearboxes by studying friction and distribution of lubricant in a gearbox. The motive for researching this field is the increasing demand for sustainability and reduced carbon dioxide emissions, which can be related to the efficiency of gearboxes. The aim of our Bachelor Thesis is to instigate further scientific research about optimizing the drivline by providing information regarding how to construct a gearbox which can serve as a fundament for further research. In other words, mapping the activities required for constructing a gearbox. After discussing with CEVT and several postgraduates, a requirement specification was established listing all the needs and desires regarding the study. In order to collect data, a survey was conducted which examined several formerly established gearboxes. The information was then used as references and inspiration for the shaping of our final design. Worth mentioning is that the gearbox will be driven without any load except for the load produced by the lubricant. Having conducted several different design evaluations, it was decided to construct a transparent gearbox in order to maximize the visualization of the ongoing internal processes of the gearbox i.e. the distribution of lubricant on the gears. The study then continues by determining compatible dimensions of the gearbox components e.g. gears, walls etc. This was done by creating a virtual model in the software Catia v5, setting the adequate constraints and finally running kinematic simulations using the DMU Kinematics function found in Catia. Once the design and dimensions had been defined, the following step was determining which material to use for realizing the virtual model. Using the software CES EduPack along with the requirement specification, the polymer material polycarbonate was selected to use for the walls due to its satisfying mechanical properties, termal properties and properties for processing. The study resulted in a virtual model, derived from the defined constraints and criterias, along with detailed information regarding the design process. Since the initial purpose was to provide information and mapping of the activities needed to construct the gearbox, the study achieved its original objective. Moreover, the simulations of the virtual model demonstrate that a physical prototype would function in reality. The Thesis finishes with a discussion on how the construction process was conducted, underlying causes and alternative approaches to certain activities. The study also ends with a conclusion and the authors’ input regarding future research.
