Sammanfattning
Abstract This report examines the possibilities of implementing unmanned aerial vehicles, also called drones, for the transport of medical samples in the healthcare sector. The report is made for Innovationsplattformen in the Västra Götaland region with the aim of investigate how a more coequal healthcare can be created by rationalize blood culture transport through drones. Information has been collected and analysed about the current transport system, lead time within it, driving routes and management of blood culture samples. This resulted into the fact that the care is not coequal and how large time differences it can be for patients between Södra Älvsborgs länssjukhus and Alingsås hospital. A comparison has been made between the current transport system and a theoretical system to demonstrate that almost coequal care can be achieved with a complementary drone transport system. To find a potential drone suitable for transport of blood culture samples between Alingsås hospital and Södra Älvsborgs länssjukhus, a requirement specification was produced. The specification is based on, among other things, careful analysis of weather history, experiences from similar projects, facts from today’s transportation system and legal requirements. Due to the requirements a market research and ranking of existing drones was carried out, after which a theoretically suitable drone was appointed. The report shows that it can take up to 52 hours longer to begin analysis of a blood culture taken at Alingsås hospital compared to Södra Älvsborgs länssjukhus. This is partly due to the opening hours of the microbiological laboratory at Södra Älvsborgs länssjukhus and to few daily blood culture transports. Almost coequal healthcare can be achieved through simply implementing drones. Further average lead time can be reduced by extended opening hours.
