This work has been carried out on one of SKF's production units for lubrication systems. At the SKF Lubrication Competence Centre in Askim, lubrication systems are pre-assembled and later installed at the customer's disposal. No device is manufactured on the unit, they only pre-assemble customized products.
At present, SKF Lubrication Competence Centre operates according to what they call “The Uddevalla model” where an operator performs the entire pre-assembly from the pick of components to placing completed article on the shelf. The unit acts as a functional workshop with high flexibility, a lot of walking time and low utilization of each workstation as there is no specific process. There is also no standardized way of working, every operator has his own way.
Therefore, they now want to increase efficiency and develop a process, where each workstation can be utilized to a greater extent with existing staff. They also want to find a way to better assure quality on finished products. The purpose of the work has been to study and analyse current production flow to identify its problem areas as well as make suggestions regarding efficiency, layout and better-quality assurance.
The work began with mapping the pre-assembly to provide a clear picture of how the unit is currently working. An updated layout drawing was presented together with a flowchart. The drawing then formed the basis for the production of a number of spaghetti charts that clearly illustrated great potential for improvement. The zero-state analysis showed improvement potential for both flow, layout and quality.
After the mapping was completed, suggestions for improvements were presented through new spaghetti charts and layout drawings. For quality assurance, methods regarding better structure and a more standardized approach were presented.
In summary, it can be said that the improvement proposals give less movements and a more pleasant workplace with order and structure.
