Abstract

Contaminated drinking-water is a large problem worldwide. The aim of this project is to assess the ability of a membrane made from polytetrafluoroethylene to clean water in which contaminants are dissolved. Raman spectroscopy was used to assess the ability of the membrane to trap methanol dissolved in the water. Dielectric spectroscopy was used to assess how well the membrane could purify the water from the contaminants sodium chloride, sodium nitrate and lead nitrate. Furthermore, the pH of a hydrochloric acid solution was measured before and after the water was passed through the membrane. Results show that the concentration of ionic compounds was lowered, but methanol could not be separated from water with this type of membrane.
