- PostJambi Women(2020) Geber, Rebecka; Hansson, Moa; Karnblad, Ellen; Reynolds, Miranda; Wallin, Emma; Chalmers tekniska högskola // Institutionen för arkitektur och samhällsbyggndsteknik; Brandao, EmelioThis report is produced as a result from the course Reality Studio at Chalmers University of Technology. The project process and investigate a way of empower a group of craftswomen in the area Dunga Beach, in Kisumu, Kenya. Half of the paper concerns the outcome from a short field study performed in the concerned area, where data was collected through observations, interviews and workshops. Moreover, relationships between individuals and organizations in Dunga Beach as well as the infrastructural elements of the area was mapped out. The other part of the project was performed by the students in Sweden and Switzerland through different ideation and evaluation methods. The project resulted in a design concept consistenting of three main parts: a service design, space design and product design. The products are divided into two categories: the products and dyeing processes of local material. The result of these four areas, the service, space, products and dyeing processes, have been compiled in four manuals directed to the stakeholders. This concept offers a new approach of how to empower the craftswomen in Dunga Beach with a vision that it will strengthen the women’s role in society.
- PostPad project period(2020) Widdgård, Thea; Ljungberg, Elin; Sköld, Sandra; Karlsson, Fredrik; Chalmers tekniska högskola // Institutionen för arkitektur och samhällsbyggndsteknik; Brandao, EmelioEven though almost half of the world population are women, menstruation is seen as a taboo in many countries around the world. In Kenya, the attendance among adolescent girls in school is decreasing, girls even drop out of school due to the limited access to sanitary products such as menstruation pads. During Reality Studio, many projects involving the sanitary pad, ZingiPad have been performed. This year the Pad Project Period was executed, the vision of the project is to make a difference for young girls in Kenya and also for the organization Zingira. Zingira is a community based organization that coordinates with local artisans to produce products from recycled and locally sourced materials. One of their products is the ZingiPad, which is sold to local schools and aims to help girls and women who can not afford to buy sanitary products. If the production would increase it would result in more girls getting access to sanitary pads. If the production of sanitary pads at Zingira would improve the income will increase, which will help the organization develop to be more impactful. To reach the aim, the project was divided into four themes, Production, Business, Material, and Education. Each theme has a different aim, which is important for reaching the main aim and purpose of the project.
- PostThe Seedling Project(2020) Davidsson, Ella; Johansson, Ida; Edstam, Frida; Zorn, Markus; Gold, Sarah; Chalmers tekniska högskola // Institutionen för arkitektur och samhällsbyggndsteknik; Brandao, EmelioThe Seedling Project aims to highlight the value of organ- ic waste and the possibilities of local food production at a household level through online education material suitable for children across the globe. When beginning our project in Kisumu, Kenya, we found there was a need to improve the waste management within the city. Especially the organic waste, being 60 percent of the total waste, caused problems at markets and on the streets. We shifted our focus to children in primary school to find how we could support their learning within the subject of agriculture and composting. By teaching children about the circularity of food, food waste and small-scale farm- ing, we could show the value of organic waste and inspire to sort and make use of it. The Covid-19 pandemic outbreak made us reframe the project. Due to the pandemic, a lot of children were restricted to quarantine and could no longer go to school. This made us shift focus from the context of Kisumu to a global context where we found there was a need for home activities and education. We created manuals for home learning and invited 12 children from Kenya, Austria, Sweden and the U.S. to participate in a pilot project. To educate the children in the pilot group, an online platform was set up where the participants could share their work and comment on each other ́s plants, composts and food, among others. In the manuals the two guiding avatars, Space Potato and Wormy, graphically explained to the children how to do the given task, with the purpose of reducing the language barriers and to make the activities more fun. For future expansion of the project, we collected the learning material and the method we used in a guiding handbook. This was sent out to the parents of the pilot group and to different communities on social media, such as Fridays for Future.
