    The assignment has been to design a dementia village on a given site. To create a safe environment for the elderly where it’s possible to connect with the local community but also to get a sense of freedom and home. UTBY To meet the increasing demand for elderly care facilities, the city of Gothenburg has decided to evaluate a potential site in Utby for an elderly care home. The suburban area of Utby is located northeast of central Gothenburg. The neighbourhood consists mainly of single-family households, schools and pre-schools, a grocery store, and small shops. Utby has many green areas both within and surrounding the community. The area is home to many typical Swedish houses with colourful wood facades. During autumn, these colours flourish and blend well together with the surroundings. The house typologies are primarily one or two storey buildings with gabled roofs in various shapes and sizes

    As the population in Sweden is aging, age related diseases are on the rise. The environment that we are commonly surrounded by is more often than not unsuitable, or in some cases hostile, to older people. In this project, the focus is set upon people with advanced symptoms of dementia. For them, the way the environment is designed can make a real difference. It could be a source of stress, dizziness and fear if not accommodating to their condition. Dead ends, reflections, inaccessible paths and the lack of contrast, are sources of confusion and could get in the way of understanding their surroundings. However if done correctly, the environment can also be a source of comfort and stimulation. The goal of this design is to create assisted living facilities in Utby, Gothenburg, that can be considered as a home. It needs to transpire a sense of safety and bring comfort to its inhabitants. Three concepts are applied throughout the site: to create a neighborhood, to build a diverse and complex environment, to design with the local natural qualities. These guidelines will support a dementia village design enabling choice, flexibility, but also bring a sense of calm to its inhabitants.

    Remembering nature | A dementia village in Utby

    The analysis provided an essential overview of the area surrounding the plot. Especially important to highlight is the existing nature, including the trees as well as the highest point on the property. These aspects are very relevant when working with the existing topography and could provide natural boundaries for the plot and project, especially towards adjacent houses and roads. Additionally existing functions were mapped that could be incorporated into the project. These include for example the kindergarten and currently existing allotment gardens. Also important was taking a look at the street network to further understand access points to the plot.

    DEMENTIA VILLAGE UTBY

    Our vision has been to create a sense of home. To do so, we have emphasized the concept of the village. Therefore, the living units have been arranged to create both a sense of individuality and social inclusion. We have worked primarily with three building typologies. The suburban, the urban, and the modern. This is to create the same feeling of diversity, variety, and distinctiveness as would be experienced in the urban landscape of the outside world. For the living units we have chosen rather domestic typologies reminiscent of traditional dwelling. The suburban living units are placed on the eastern side of the plot. This is to create a connection and continuity with the surrounding low-scale residential area of Utby. On the top of the hill, to the south-west, we have chosen to place the larger, more urban, structures. These overlook the landscape and create a distinct “town-like” silhouette. For the common and administrative areas, such as the entrance building, café, and the handmaking area, we have however chosen a modern design language with the use of glass, steel and both sharp and organic shapes. Consequently, these buildings create a contrast to the more traditional style of the living units. In between the buildings we have put a lot of weight on the parks and courtyards. The green courtyards connect all the buildings on the different layers with pathways and small squares to further emphasis the village concept. But additionally, the green areas are seen as essential for health promotion and well-being. So, they are designed for variety and different kinds of stimulation for the senses. There are for example active spaces for gardening or boule, as well as quiet spaces for meditation or to just enjoy the view. Whoever the residents of this dementia village are, or wherever they come from, our intention is that they will feel at home, safe, and part of a lively and inclusive community.

    NEW BREATH IN THE VILLAGE a dementia village for utby

    PROGRAM The project site is located in Utby, Gothenburg, in a residential area of small villas. The program requires to design a dementia village of 80-100 apartments split into units with common areas. Moreover, good connections with outdoors is an important part of this kind of project. The particularity of such a program is that it is not only residential that must be designed, but also a whole organization for the staff to be able to work in good conditions. This project requires good housing qualities while being efficient and practical from a healthcare point of view. Another part of the program was to think of public functions that the neighbourhood could also benefit from. SITE The site in Utby is quite enclosed since no road is directly reaching it. Moreover, it is a sloping terrain, around twenty meters height difference from one side to the other. It is currently used as a public wood with paths. Everyone can pass by and have a walk. All of the vegetation might be worth saving. On the eastern part of the site stands an allotment garden, which is also the flattest part of the terrain. SURROUNDINGS AND CONNECTIONS The area is mainly residential with few stores. We can find a lot of pre-schools and schools with some playgrounds. Several sport facilities (indoor and outdoor) are located quite close and a big forest borders the north side. However, there are no cultural buildings in the area except churches. To reach the site of the village, several bus stops are between 5-10 minutes away by walking and several small roads also surrounds the site.
