The main purpose of this bachelor thesis is to create a product in the form of a database that can be used for cost estimates of equipment within bio refineries. Through interviews and literature searches the key components and their costs were identified. The database was constructed in Microsoft Excel with different tabs for different categories of components; these tabs are further divided into three parts: one part with costs, one part with calculations and an information part. Most of the part with costs contains the expenses found in scientific papers during the literature study, the calculating part converts different capacities according to user preferences and the currency to euro (€) from 2010 and the information part consists of references and information about what is included in the cost. The database is a good tool for making cost estimates for bio refineries. The strengths of the database are its ease of use, its capability of handling different currencies at different times and the fact that it covers a large number of components. However, it allows only rough estimates, and therefore cannot be used to make final cost estimates for real life investments. This would require a much more detailed study, as margins can be very small. The type of database generated during this project works best for comparison of different alternative technologies. When costs and profitability for competing technologies are estimated in the database, they are fairly accurate relative to one another even if the estimated costs can differ from the real price. Therefore, this type of database is useful whenever techniques at an early stage of development need be compared with each other. To test the database a profitability analysis is also performed on a typical bio refinery concept including an investigation of the necessary level of financial support to make it an economically viable technique at different repayment terms. The result is that for a repayment period of 10 years, a financial assistance of 0.081 euro (€)/kWh SNG is needed, for 15 years 0.036 euro (€)/kWh SNG and for 20 years 0.014 euro (€)/kWh SNG is needed. To check if these levels are reasonable, it is compared with the support in Denmark, which is 50 öre/kWh SNG and the payback period for this process with the Danish assistance is 12.7 years. Since companies often strive for a repayment period of 10-20 years it seems like it is a pretty good estimate, but there are still large uncertainties in the assessment of the viability.
