Abstract: In today’s society, garbage disposal is an environmental challenge. Partly because the waste disposal system is energy consuming, but also because it is difficult to estimate in advance when a garbage bin needs emptying. The person responsible for emptying a specific garbage bin therefore needs to visit it to tell if it is full or not. The main goal of the project have been to design a system that can make garbage collection more effective by making garbage bins smart. This is done with a compact, integrated hardware unit that can easily be installed into a garbage bin and that continuously measures the amount of garbage in the bin. The hardware communicates with a web application via ZigBee where the user in real time can see which garbage bins needs to be emptied from a computer or a smartphone. Further, the system is able to calculate new, efficient garbage collection routes, also in real time. Found in the report is a description of the different components used: an Arduino, shields for network communication and an ultrasonic distance sensor. The software is written in HTML5 and uses a MySQL database. The maps in the application comes from Google Maps. The reader may also follow the entire development of the hardware that measures the bin’s waste level, complete with motivations for different choices of components. The development is done in an iterative process. Finally, the graphical user interface is demonstrated through screenshots of the application.
