Abstract: Several neighboring ports in the Mälardalen region are competing in terms of container volumes due to the fact that liner shipping companies are continuously striving to minimize the number of port of calls in order to reduce their costs. As a result of the ongoing container vessel evolution, a capacity expansion is essential for an existing port in the region to be called at by the forthcoming generation feeder vessels and cope with the difficult competitive situation. In this case study an innovative solution is proposed for the Port of Södertälje as an alternative to an expansion of a port in a traditional manner. The main focus of this Bachelor Thesis is to evaluate whether a floating offshore container transshipment terminal has the potential to make the Port of Södertälje a substantial hub port in the future region of Mälardalen. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the capacity need for both handling and storing in the offshore facility in order to enable this. In order to perform the evaluation, interviews, that form the structural basis of the thesis, were pursued with several persons from different areas of business within the shipping industry. Furthermore, literature and statistical studies have been conducted. The case study has established that the floating offshore container transshipment terminal is a flexible and environmentally sustainable solution, unlike a traditional port expansion. Further, the analysis, which was performed using three alternative scenarios, has clarified that the offshore terminal equipped with two operating gantry cranes is an applicable solution for the Port of Södertälje to expand its existing port capacity and thus become an essential port in the Mälardalen region.
