|Abstract: ||Increased globalization and growth means increased trade between countries and this indirectly increases the need for shipping. In shipping, this means that the vessels are getting larger and that more sailors are needed (Bucknall, 2003). Parallel to this trend ship owners try to cut costs by reducing the crew and lowering speeds (slow steam) in order to lower the bunker costs and the environmental impact (Woo, 2013). For ship owners it is also of great importance that accidents at Sea can be avoided. A majority of all maritime accidents are caused by the human factor (Chauvin, 2013). These circumstances have initiated the EU-funded research project Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks (MUNIN), a project which Chalmers are engaged in. MUNIN's goal is to develop unmanned vessel technology that can operate within the commercial shipping industry. The purpose of this report is to investigate three different shipping companies view of the possibilities and risks associated with unmanned vessels in order to find out how interested they are in the technology. This has been investigated through interviews with three representatives from three different shipping companies in the segments tanker, dry bulk and container shipping. The interviews show that the owners of the various shipping segments have different attitudes toward the opportunities and risks with unmanned vessels. The interviews also indicate that the tanker shipping industry sees overwhelming risks regarding the technology while the container shipping industry and especially the dry cargo shipping industry believe that the technology can improve efficiency and reduce operational costs. Nonetheless, this assumes that the unmanned ships will be internationally legalized. The representatives do however not recognize MUNIN’s motives. The shipping companies are interested in unmanned vessel technology when it can prove that the costs can be reduced and the safety enhanced. Unmanned vessel technology has an international scope and other countries may experience MUNIN's motives differently. Therefore, it is also suggested that the ship owner’s interest in the technology should be explored on an international level.|
