Abstract: When projects are being carried out in the construction industry, the design phase is of great importance for the design of the final construction work. The project manager plays a central role in leading the project in the right direction, so that it results in the customer being satisfied and fulfilling the demand. There is a need in the construction sector to work out clear guidelines on how the design manager should work and what settings should be in place to create good design management. Design in the construction process is about leading people in creative projects. This means that the project manager must care for, respect and manage innovative ideas to make the best outcome for the customer. It is about creating conditions for a project that is in line with the project goals, which in turn supports the client's business goals. The main purpose of the study is to identify whether there are any key factors that create good design management and ultimately lead to a successful project. This is achieved by examining what characterizes a skilled design manager and how that person works. Furthermore, it is investigated what the clarification of these factors causes and what benefit this means. The study also deals with how the literature defines and describes the term design management. The study is based on interviews with two experienced design managers from an architectural company, both of whom have been responsible for the design process in two separate projects. To get a broader perspective and a more illuminating picture of the situation, members of the project group have also been interviewed. By arranging the key factors that appeared in groups, four areas became clear. These areas are time, holistic view, group composition and goal formulation. The recommendation to participating companies is to add time and resources to deepen their skills in design management. It is an important area, which needs to be studied more in the future, as the cost of construction has to be reduced. If we get better designed projects, errors and shortcomings in production will cause less impact on project costs.
