Abstract: Warehouse order picking is the most important activity in a warehousing system since it accounts for more than half of the total cost in a warehouse. Due to this, there have been advancement and introduction of paperless picking systems which can reduce error and decrease the time spent on picking. The aim of this thesis is to examine and propose a suitable picking system in the component warehouses which feeds production at ABB capacitors in Ludvika, Sweden. This purpose led to a framework for an order picking system using ABB capacitors as a case study. The design of this framework is achieved by an extensive literature study, benchmarking at another unit of ABB group in Ludvika and observation made at ABB capacitors. The design framework which is a result of this study focuses on preconditions required prior to the design of an order picking system, design steps that should be considered and performance evaluation of the system. In addition, this thesis proposed the use of a handheld barcode scanner in ABB capacitors warehouse since it is more suitable and can be used as a paperless picking technology in the company. Some benefits of the proposed picking system at ABB capacitors includes substantial cost and time savings as well as error reduction in the picking process. The result of this work can be applicable to similar cases and can serve as a guideline in the design of a picking system in a manufacturing warehouse. Also, this thesis contributes to existing literatures in order picking system design especially in the case of an ETO manufacturing firms.
