Abstract: Skanska is in need of an automatic lifting apparatus that makes it possible to lift concrete piles without exposing their employees to unnecessary risks. This thesis was done to generate solutions to the problem and create a foundation for further work. In order to establish a frame of reference, analysis of competitors and existing products for industrial lifting have been made. This gave a clearer picture of the problem at hand and the criteria needed to solve it. The product requirement specification was made to ensure that the concept met the set requirements. There was a change of course later in the project development process to instead look at the possibilities of a vision system. This provided great knowledge about vision systems and related software. A few of these systems with differing technologies that are relevant to this project and on the market today are presented. Concept generation spawned seven concepts without a vision system and three concepts with one. Finally, the concepts went through a pair of decision matrices according to the criteria formerly established through the product requirement specification. Firstly the Pugh Concept Selection to eliminate the concepts that are not as good as the existing solution, then Kesselring to compare the remaining concepts with each other. This provides the best solution based on the requirements set by Skanska and project workers. This thesis resulted in a concept, “Löpvagnen”, that can lift concrete piles without exposing employees to any unnecessary risks.
