Sammanfattning
Electric machine thermal modelling using 3D Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations, is a vital process in the design and verification of Lumped Parameter Thermal Networks (LPN). In this thesis, the aim is to continue the CFD Modelling of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, and further improve the existing LPN model. This thesis is a continuation of the Master’s thesis “Electric motor internal heat convection modelling and analysis” conducted by Anil Kumar during 2018. The CFD model is built using a bottom-up approach where each significant region of the motor (Ex: Air-gap, End windings, etc) is modelled and validated by similar models from journals, empirical formulation, literature or experiments. The complete CFD model is then validated against rig measurements. With this assertion, the CFD model is then used to run steady state simulations for various load cases and operating points to extract data. This data can be used as parameters in the LPN model, or to calibrate the model itself. This way, the highly simplified 1-Dimensional LPN model is verified by 2 or 3-Dimensional CFD simulations, which itself is validated by literature and physical measurements. These 1D LPN, 2D models or 3D CFD simulations can be applied in the future, for various different electric machines or prototype models to analyze cooling strategies and performance.
