Sammanfattning: This report covers the thesis written for the Swedish Sea Rescue Society abbreviated as the SSRS during the first half of 2021. The objective of the thesis was to investigate the application of variable pitch within a Search and Rescue Drone that is being developed by SSRS. As the importance of low weight is vital for this drone it was believed that using a variable pitch system for the propeller could save on battery space and therefore weight of the drone. With the objective established the theory behind variable pitch was investigated, including how it would be best implemented within their current design. Thereafter tests were performed using a variable pitch motor & system called MEVP2216 made by the company Hobby Wings. These tests were first performed in a stationary configuration and thereafter in a wind tunnel at Chalmers University of Technology. After encountering issues with vibrations and the lacking performance of the MEVP2216 system simulations were used to compliment the results acquired from the wind tunnel testing. The testing and simulations confirmed that using a variable pitch system results in an increase in the efficiency of the propeller. By creating an artificial test using simulations it was estimated that an increase in propeller efficiency of up to 38.4% could be expected for the proposed flight conditions.
