    With the disused quarry at Smöjen, Gotland as a context, this thesis asks the question How can architects take responsibility for the use of materials when re-programming post-industrial landscapes? The thesis aims at highlighting the necessity of conscious use of materials by utilizing the landscape. The argument is being made that the physical limitations that come with a landscape-based design could be formulated as a creative framework that opens up for interesting solutions while avoiding depletion of recourses. As a result of mining natural resources on an ever-increasing scale, the amount of extraction sites have multiplied. Today, there are rules and guidelines for the rehabilitation of quarries, but quarries from before the 1970s have not been subject to rehabilitation in the same way. The harsh landscape alterations of dis-used quarries make the landscape-rehabilitation process slow, but the same barren landscape with its traces from past lives have proven to attract an increasing number of visitors. Smöjen is subject to this increasing tourism meanwhile in need of rehabilitation to prevent potential safety hazards. Regionally, Smöjen is defined as an area of development in the larger context of the Gotland archipelago. The thesis proposes an intervention at Smöjen limestone quarry, focusing on three support structures for information, visits and accommodation, using the existing landscape and material remains as a design framework. Literature research, archive visits and extensive site explorations have informed the design proposal. In addition, an extension of the hiking trail S:t Olofsleden is proposed, adding context to Smöjen and other already established visitor destinations along the north-east coast. The thesis focuses on the understanding of the material in the early phases of the design process. The proposal preserves and strengthens the identity of Smöjen, demonstrating concept development in relation to material use and circularity and contributes to the discussion regarding the architect as consumer of building materials.

    Enhancing effective information management: Designing a framework for improved implementation

    Effective information management is critical to the success of construction projects, yet the industry continues to face persistent challenges in this area. This study aims to investigate common challenges hindering efficient information management in construction projects, design a conceptual framework to address these challenges, and promote teamwork to facilitate effective information management throughout the project lifecycle. The research methodology involved a systematic literature review and interviews with key relevant stakeholders in the construction industry. The literature review encompassed academic papers, reports, and grey literature, ensuring a reliable and scholarly foundation for the investigation. The interviews involved professionals from construction companies, experts in information management, and relevant project stakeholders, providing a diverse representation of expertise within the industry. The study found that incomplete, inaccurate, or poorly defined information often leads to suboptimal decision-making, operational inefficiencies, and a reduction in the quality of facility operation and maintenance. The proposed framework is designed to establish a structured approach to information management in the construction industry, aligning closely with the real-world needs and challenges identified during the interview process. It is based on the principles and guidelines outlined in the ISO 19650 standard and can potentially provide practical solutions and recommended tools to facilitate the seamless implementation of the standard. The framework promotes teamwork and collaboration among stakeholders, ensuring that information is communicated transparently and exchanged with the appropriate individuals at the right time. By addressing the persistent challenges in information management, the proposed framework can help construction projects achieve success and deliver value to customers.

    The vastness of the ocean, the sound of waves crashing on the shore, and the subtle hues of green of the windswept trees. A sense of calmness and peace of mind. For many people, nature is a sanctuary. To preserve especially significant natural areas, the concept of nature reserves emerged in the 19th century. Haverdal Nature Reserve, north of Halmstad, is one of the oldest in Halland County. Some of the most prominent characteristics of this coastal site include a vast stretch of beach that gradually transitions into undulating sand dunes, patchy fields of grass, reed, and mythical pine forests. Apart from being a significant biotope, Haverdal is also an appreciated recreational area. To emphasize the importance of protecting this unique and fragile environment for future generations, knowledge is crucial. Therefore, the result of this thesis is a speculative design proposal for a naturum in Haverdal, a visitor center focusing on educating about the local ecosystem and cultural history. The initial phase of the investigation involves defining naturum as a concept, providing a brief history and analysis of the site, including its unique ecological, historical, and geographical conditions. Following this, two built reference projects are studied. The result is the identification of four design principles, which are then tested and implemented in a final design proposal.

    Food vs. city: Re-arranging the urban and rural

    We have lived in cities for thousands of years, but yet we are as dependent on food as we ever were. Food is the source to our existence and the cities we live in would not exist without farming. The city-centric population is due to double in 2050 and when it does, all the arable land on the planet will not be sufficient with the need for food. Yet we appear to live to live independent from the land that feeds us. In a Swedish perspective the relationship between the land and the city is most urgent in the region of Skåne. The region has the most arable land in Sweden and it is also where the land gets the most exploited. To reclaim exploited arable into food production again is nearly impossible. The current growing city transforms its surroundings into hardscapes (agriculture land turned into asphalt or buildings) which pushes food production further away from the consumer. The source of food is in another country, the process of making the food is controlled by a few large companies and the consumer meets the food in car-bound big box areas around the cities. It is necessary to involve all steps of food production in our cities, to increase food knowledge, to localize the food-chain and to prepare for the future. This thesis explores strategies and prototypes for how land and city can be treated with same value, how the urban and rural can co-exist instead of being conflicting. The site is located in the south-west of the region between the two major cities Malmö and Lund, and is defined by the existing infrastructure and its proximity to rail bound communication

    Parametric design of efficient high-rise buildings: Development of a design and analysis tool for the early design stages

    High-rise buildings have become increasingly popular during the past few decades. They have a large potential in providing more floor area for the same building footprint. However, high-rise buildings also require more material in their structural systems to withstand the wind loads that they are subjected to due to their height. High-rise buildings are therefore generally regarded as an unsustainable building type, making it even more important to analyze and optimize their structural systems in early design stages to minimize their environmental impact. This thesis investigates how a parametric design and analysis tool can be developed and utilized in the early design stages of a high-rise building. By parametrizing a FE-model of the core, the tool computes data on the structural performance and climate impact of several designs. This allows for evaluation of an optimal structural design in regard to low climate impact while fulfilling the structural requirements. The tool development consists of an intuitive tool for the very early design stages in Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper, as well as an in-depth analysis tool in ETABS with scripting in Excel and VBA. The aim with the Rhino/Grasshopper tool is to obtain preliminary dimensions and understand the structural behavior of the core. The tool in ETABS computes data on the structural performance and CO2e of several designs, allowing to make informed design decisions based on a set of evaluation criteria. The outcome of this thesis indicates that there is a significant possibility of reducing the material usage and climate impact of the core of a high-rise building. The most important factor is to reduce the amount of concrete in the core, which is preferably achieved by increasing the dimensions of the core and decreasing the core wall thicknesses. Lastly, the thesis concludes that the utilization of parametric tools in the construction industry is a valuable asset in decreasing the climate impact of high-rise buildings.
