Sagaform has noticed a growing outdoor trend since the pandemic and wants to expand their outdoor collection with an environmentally friendly cooler backpack that satisfies the target group. The customers include private customers, business customers and retailers. The aim of the thesis is to develop a new concept for a cooler backpack that the company can further develop and add to their collection. Sagaform wants to investigate one of the cooler bags in the City series with the aim of mapping the environmental impact during the life cycle. The main questions that the project answered were how the environmental impact of the new concept could be reduced relative to the City Cooler Backpack and how the product should be designed to appeal to the target group. As a result of limited resources, the cooler backpacks have not previously been analyzed regarding the customer and life cycle. The project followed an iterative product development process and used empirical methods to identify customer requirements and needs, followed by a life cycle analysis to identify the environmental impact. The customer needs and experience of the product were identified through interviews, focus groups and usability tests. Sagaform's current cooler backpack in the City series was investigated using interviews and the material database Granta EduPack. The final concept resulted in Cooler Backpack Lo, which has a reduced environmental impact in comparison to City Cooler Backpack due to the choice of material and increased recycled content. The percentage of recycled material has increased from 20% to 77%, which corresponds to 16.3% lower energy consumption and 15.2% lower carbon dioxide emissions. Cooler bags are primarily used during summer and tend to be tucked away the rest of the year. Cooler backpack Lo is a multifunctional product concept with an extended area of use and can be used regardless of the season in the city, on the beach or in the forest. The final concept is designed for the 5-95 percentile where needs and requirements have been achieved through two separate compartments for cooling and other packing, a removable shoulder bag and attachment of packing. Cooler backpack Lo includes a QR code that promotes correct use by providing the user with information about the product, how the backpack should be packed, sustainability work and End of Life. The result includes a design, color, dimensions, materials, life cycle analysis and improved ergonomics. The concept is presented with analogue and digital sketches.
