Total BIM in the Swedish Construction Industry; MMI and FMI as Supporting Frameworks

| dc.description.abstract | The Swedish construction sector is moving toward more digital and model-based ways of working, where BIM models are expected to contain more of the project information. However, many projects still use Hybrid BIM, where models and tra ditional drawings are used in parallel. This creates uncertainties related to coor dination and responsibility. This thesis explores the potential benefits, challenges, and consequences of using Total BIM in a Swedish construction context, with the help of two additional indices, Model Maturity Index (MMI) and Function Maturity Index (FMI). The study is based on a review of related work, five digital workshops, interviews with industry actors, and a qualitative analysis of the collected material. The study shows that MMI can make model-based work more structured by describ ing how mature model objects are and when they can be used for reviews, decisions, procurement, production, or handovers. FMI can complement MMI by focusing on the technical systems and functions. However, while MMI is more developed and currently tested in pilot projects, FMI is still under early development in Sweden. The study also shows that the main challenges are not only technical, but also or ganisational, contractual, and cultural. This requires better conditions, routines, a common language, and more trust in model information if Total BIM, MMI, and FMI are to work in practice. The thesis conclusion states that MMI and FMI can support a Total BIM workflow in Sweden, but if it is implemented and adapted into Swedish project standards, it needs to be useful and efficient for the people who will work with it | |
