This thesis work aims to test a natural fiber material and assess whether it is possible to use as a manufacturing material for door panels at International Automotive Components. One combination of a composite material was analyzed. Material properties were studied with sample tests according to Volvo's standard of a composite material of 50% flax and 50% PP. The composite was compared with ABS, which is the manufacturing material for today's door panels in Volvo´s new XC90. Natural fiber has good mechanical properties compared to its density. Being able to replace part of the door material with natural fibers are not only more environmentally friendly, with the right composition it can also reduce weight. Material properties of the composite samples were examined for heat resistance, moisture test, fogging (which is a test where the material condensing ability is measured), odor test, tensile-strength and flammability test. The composite material passes the test for heat resistance with no visible deformation in the material. From the moisture test the sample had no deformation. But its weight and softness of the material has increased for both samples. The fogging test is approved for the test at 85°C. The material did not approve the hard test at 110°C but neither did the ABS. From the odor test the material had a strange fragrance to an automotive component worker, but the ABS had the same fragrance strength. The tensile-strength tests got an unexpected result for the composite at 39 MPa and an elongation at break of 4.2%. This unexpectedly low value depends on the binding characteristics between flax and PP. The binding characteristics can be improved if a lower amount of flax is in the composite. Another solution is to add another material to the composite with good binding properties, as a suggestion the material MAPP (Maleic acid Anhydride Polypropylene). From the flammability test, the composite material got good qualities and had shorter burn time than ABS. After the analyses the composite had no deformation, when the ABS had a widely-spread deformation around the burning point. The project has shown that the composite material has a good potential to be used as material for door panels but that more extensive tests need to be performed to obtain an optimal mix of flax, PP and possibly addition of binders.
