Sammanfattning
Graniten Engineering AB is a company that designs automated machine solutions for
packaging various products, with a primary focus on pharmaceutical packaging. One of their
products is an case sealer that both packs and seals packages. In the tape unit of the case
sealer there is a horizontal tape dispenser where the package is fed onto a conveyor belt and
the flaps are sealed with tape. According to Graniten, this tape dispenser is a weakness in the
case sealer that needs to be replaced with a better alternative. Therefore, we were assigned
the task by Graniten to systematically find a new tape dispenser to recommend.
This is done using inspiration from product development methodology. It begins with
identifying customer needs and determining the type of needs they are: basic requirements,
stated requirements, or unstated requirements. Then, a requirement specification is created,
translating the needs into specific requirements and preferences. All requirements and
preferences are derived from interviews and discussions with Graniten employees who have
expertise in the field. Function specifications were also helpful, providing information on the
requirements their customers have for the tape dispenser.
Next, a market analysis was conducted using the search function on Google. As many
different keywords and synonyms as possible were used to avoid the risk of missing any
potential tape heads. All horizontal tape heads found were chosen to proceed with, along with
some vertical tape heads. In total, 24 concepts were found, one of which was their current
tape head for the purpose of comparing it as well
This comparison was done using an elimination matrix, which is also part of the classical
product development methodology. All concepts were compared against the requirements,
and any concept that did not meet all the requirement was eliminated. This resulted in three
remaining concepts: two new tape dispensers and their current tape dispenser
