Abstract

This report examines the market and use of ballast water treatment systems on board ships around the world. The report describes the most common types of treatment methods for ballast water, its functions and price information for different systems. Treatment methods covered in the report include among others physical separations, ultraviolet disinfection, cavitation treatment and additive methods. Further is the ballast water management convention is summarized in the report. A survey was sent out to a number of different shipping companies, to do a market research in the use of ballast water treatment systems. An interview was conducted with a world leader company in ballast water treatment systems, where we discussed price information and function of the system. The results in this report show that coastal-going vessels have not installed treatment systems on board, however the majority of ocean-going vessels have systems installed on board which in many cases are also used. Price table in the results summarizes the different treatment methods and its costs in form of, purchase, operation and maintenance.
