Abstract

The project has been implemented on behalf of FKAB, an independent marine engineering company mainly active in the marine and shipbuilding industry. One important objective of FKAB is to contribute to a better environment and a sustainable shipping. One way to achieve this goal is through electric propulsion. The thesis attempts to investigate whether a conversion from diesel to electrical propulsion is applicable on the vessel Älvsnabben 4 for sailing a specified route along Göta Älv. The most essential considerations are the space allocation to accommodate the batteries and what components can be removed from the existing powertrain. Furthermore, feasibility studies must be conducted to confirm whether Göteborgs harbor has the sufficient amount of energy available and also affirm the amount of energy the vessel requires for the given route. To enable a conversion requires identification of the operational profile for the vessel, design of the powertrain and choice of battery. The powertrain is produced in collaboration with well established, experienced companies within the field of electric propulsion for marine applications. Designing the charge cabinet, charge plug and reconstruction costs are not included in this project. The final conclusion is that a conversation from diesel to electrical drive is possible. The thesis presents two kinds of battery solutions from different manufactures. An estimation of cost has been made for the powertrain.
