Abstract

Whenever new machinery is due to be installed in an industrial environment there is a variety of requirements to fulfil relating to production flow. Determining wether these requirements are fulfilled can be an arduous process. This thesis work aims to examine wether Augmented Reality technology can be applied to streamline such a process. The chosen method to do this is to create a mobile application that can place virtual models of machines within a real world environment. The goal is for the application to serve as proof of concept for further development. The application will be assessed based on how lifelike the interaction between virtual and the real world environment is. The potential for developing such an application comes from new Augmented Reality technology with the capability to detect flat surfaces. The thesis work resulted in a mobile application for iOS, developed in the programming language Swift with the ARKit framework. The application can place animated 3D-models of machines in a real world environment. In order to ensure that the 3D-models are rendered in the right field of depth the application can also detect vertical surfaces and place 3D-models of walls. The completed application’s success indicates that the project has potential to help evaluating industrial production requirements given further development.
