Sammanfattning
The purpose of our study was to gain an understanding of how the shipping companies perceive the problem of marine growth and what they are doing to combat it. If they are positive to mechanical hull cleaning and the information they have to make decisions about it. We also wanted to know what they think about new technologies in the field and especially what they think about cleaning with new types of ROVs. Do they think in-water hull cleaning is something positive or do they prefer to avoid it and what effects would that have to the environment and economy? In our results, we have concluded that mechanical cleaning between ships dockings is probably the best solution to tackle marine fouling as today's antifouling paint cannot counteract all types of fouling. These cleanings should be carefully planned to minimize emissions of chemicals and organisms. Future laws and regulations may force shipping companies to have clean hulls free from non-indigenous species before arrival, mechanical cleaning is seen as the likely option as there are not yet any toxic antifouling that removes all types of fouling. Ship owners’ desire is that an effective antifouling paint will come to market as quickly as possible. If they can manage to prevent fouling before it settles on the hull, then they won’t need to perform cleaning. This would result in a big cost cut for ship-owners and in an already pressured industry with a lot of savings this would be very positive for the shipping owners.
