The basis of this bachelor thesis is the creation of a handbook including design guidelines to be used by companies who are interested in Large Scale Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). The project is a collaboration between Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) and students from Chalmers University of Technology. RISE provides the opportunity for companies interested in large scale FDM to test this manufacturing method for their application. For small scale FDM there are well defined and widely implemented guidelines which will help in the creation of designs well suited for the technique. This is not yet the case for large scale FDM. There are quite a lot of aspects that one must consider when designing for large scale FDM and some of them differ from small scale and other kinds of manufacturing techniques. This lack of guidelines and experience leads to a situation where companies have designs not well suited for large scale FDM. These unsuitable designs make the production process more troublesome which leads to increased lead times and costs. Therefore, there is a great incentive to help companies create better designs for large scale FDM. The aim of the project was therefore to create a support for mechanical- and design engineers which will help both when deciding if it’s suitable to use large scale FDM as well as provide guidelines for the actual design. The process of creating the handbook has been an iterative process. Ideation, development of concepts and writing of the handbook has been interspersed with evaluation through interviews and audits with experts and possible future stakeholders. The resulting product is a guide with three major chapters; background, decision and design. This was combined in a layout including illustrative examples, summarizing lists and plain language. Final evaluations of the handbook by the major stakeholders seem to indicate that the handbook fulfils all the necessary functions that were defined, that it will fill its purpose and support future work within the field of large scale FDM.sv
