Sammanfattning
This Master’s thesis delves into the complexities of the battery electric vehicle (BEV) value chain, examining the challenges and opportunities for value creation and cap- ture. The research establishes a strong foundation by critically analyzing the existing challenges in the BEV value chain in Chapter 4, providing valuable insights for fu- ture studies. Additionally, the thesis introduces a novel holistic model, outlined in Chapter 3.4, to analyze value chains in terms of value creation and value capture. By combining an examination of the BEV value chain with the developed holistic model, this research advances our understanding of the dynamics within the value chain. Moreover, the study uncovers the intricate power dynamics within the BEV value chain, revealing that value creation does not automatically guarantee value capture. While the findings highlight the significant role of battery suppliers in capturing value from advancements in BEV battery technology and large-scale production fa- cilities, it is crucial to recognize that multiple stakeholders can potentially capture value from a given proposal. Furthermore, automakers emerge as stakeholders driven by the desire to control battery ownership, aiming to leverage data management and synergistic effects. However, it is important to acknowledge that value capture is influenced by various factors, including stakeholder strategies, market conditions, and competitive dynamics. The thesis also emphasizes the critical role of stake- holders in the end-of-life stage, positioning them favorably to capture value through sustainable battery recycling and repurposing solutions. By shedding light on these nuances of value creation and capture, this research provides valuable insights into the complexity of value dynamics within the BEV value chain. As this study is concluded, it becomes evident that the BEV value chain oper- ates within a complex and interconnected value chain. In addition, it is recognized that the pursuit of value creation and value capture cannot be confined to silo-based thinking.
