This report is a theoretical study made to compare methanol and MGO, two alternative fuels that are relevant to the shipping industry in conjunction with more severe environmental regulations. Different methods can be applied to meet the more strict SECA-regulations, and this report handles fuels with lower sulphur content. Other aspects than sulphur content have be taken into consideration to be able to compare the fuels from another perspective than just the SECA-regulations. This report answer questions like: how will MGO and methanol stand against each other when considering environmental aspects, what are the main hazards for the crew that handles the fuel and what economic costs may arise as a result of the two different alternatives? To be able to answer these questions a study of literature is combined with interviews to collect a wide range of information. This means that both earlier research material and information from proficient people working in this area today is collected and complied. This creates a good view of the development in this field over the last few years. The progress over the last few years is clearly visible because of the applied regulations. The result shows that there are many things to consider to be able to tell which fuel is the most appropriate in different areas of use. Examples of factors that are worth considering are the crude oil price, the methanol price and the cost of retrofitting the ship. Today companies may be forced to choose between the option that the environment benefits from and the option that is the most cost effective. The low oil prices of today is the reason that methanol might not be the cheapest option, even though methanol is a more environmentally friendly fuel.
