Sammanfattning

The report is a study in the comparison of structural differences in the engine room and the systems affected by the use of methanol instead of conventional fuels such as HFO, MDO and MGO. The report answers the questions about which systems differ structurally onboard a ship powered by methanol instead of any of the conventional fuels. The report also answers how a high fire safety is to be maintained with the use of a fuel with a low flashpoint such as methanol. The report also discusses the environmental aspects of the use of methanol in relation to conventional fuels. To gather information for the report a literature review were carried out. Information has been collected through the reading of the previous research and the regulations that is currently available. The results of the report show that a number of systems are affected and that systems will be added when using methanol as fuel instead of conventional fuels. Examples of systems affected when using methanol instead of conventional fuels are the supply system of the fuel, the tank arrangement, ventilation and the need for an inert gas generator. Fire safety is maintained through design options for fixed fire extinguishing systems and automatic shutdown of the fuel system that is connected to the leakage alarm. From an environmental perspective, methanol is a good option as it is biodegradable and water soluble.
