Positive User Experience - Redesigning Chalmers’ Studentportal

By doing a redesign of Chalmers’ Studentportal the goal was to create a positive user experience while increasing the prototype’s efficiency compared to the existing website. The new design was developed in the web-based prototyping tool Figma. The first prototypes were designed after the collection of a wide range of data gathering methods; multiple structured interviews, a questionnaire, an expert analysis, multiple literature reviews and a meeting with employers working for Chalmers’ Studentportal, the project’s stakeholders. The process evolved by carefully selecting design patterns to reduce navigation issues discovered by stakeholders and user tests. Rapid prototyping was used to progress the prototype, with user tests included in each iteration. An important aspect was the inclusion of emotional charts in every user test, which enabled one to track how users felt about various features and functions in the prototype. The process resulted in a well established prototype, which was presented for the stakeholders together with the evoked emotions associated with the product. The results showed an increase of positive emotions when comparing the first user tests about the current Studentportal to the final prototype. Something that had to be considered was whether the users liked the prototype more because they were dissatisfied with the current Studentportal. If this was the case, a minor improvement in the prototype could stand out tremendously, even if the improvement is objectively considered as tolerable. Nonetheless, in the final user test, only one participant experienced a negative emotion, a slight sense of being overwhelmed, associated with the product. However, it is something that could be expected. A brand new user interface will undoubtedly take some time to adapt to and learn, which is why it is not regarded as a problem.
