Abstract

Pet ownership is on the rise in Sweden and internationally and the role pets play in people’s lives get more important. Today, pets are considered as important as human family members by many. Pets get to follow their owners almost everywhere and therefore Volvo is developing a series of products for transporting pets in their cars, called PetAir. The aim of this project is to develop a product for transporting cats and small dogs weighing up to 10kg. The project begun with researching what types of products that were currently sold on the American and Swedish market. Then, the target group was determined and user studies including a digital focus group, a survey and a summation of research done by Volvo of the US market and the Chinese market, was conducted. This constituted the information on which the project was built and was compiled into a requirements specification. Along the project I have continuously been writing down and sketching ideas. To generate even more ideas, I used the method Brainstorming. The different ideas were then ranked using the PNI-method and resulted in going forward with a concept built up by a lower and an upper part that can be used as both a pet bed and a carrier. The concept was evaluated with feedback from some of the participants in the pre-study and then further developed based on this. The final concept is an inflatable pet carrier that can be separately be used as a pet bed, constructed to be placed on a passenger seat and mounted with Isofix.
