Important motivational factors from a construction worker’s perspective

| dc.description.abstract | Due to the housing shortage in Sweden, the construction industry is experiencing a high demand, which has lead to high pressure on the construction companies and their employees. At the moment there is a common notion among big construction companies to get rid of the piecework system, and traditionally there is a high focus on wage and payment system in the construction industry. According to theory however, there should be other motivational factors called intrinsic factors that should be more important than the external factors, such as wage. This thesis aims to identify the most important motivational factors from a worker’s perspective within the construction industry, and also to identify potential areas of improvement. A model of origin has been created in order to identify which person at what level is affecting different motivation factors. In this study 13 interviews were performed along with a review of the previous research performed in the area of motivation in the construction industry. Previous research states that motivation cannot be created by others, however a motivating work environment can be created for the workers to utilise in order to find personal motivation. The thesis has been performed in close cooperation with a medium sized construction company called Tommy Byggare where the interviews have been executed. The results show a number of important motivational factors, wage is one of them but it is not considered to be the single most important, well-being and cohesiveness seems to have a greater impact according to latent data. Among the interviewees a certain Tommy Byggare “spirit” was described, something that has closely been investigated in order to establish what is contributing to this feeling. A number of demotivators, such as the risk of repetitive strain injuries have also been identified. | |
