Abstract

With the increased technological progress occurred at sea in recent time, there is an increased demand for bridge officers to take in and process data or information from multiple sources. It is important for these officers to understand the surrounding traffic situation as close to the reality as possible in order to accurately, if necessary, take actions according to the international regulations for preventing of collisions at sea (COLREG). Situation awareness (SA) involves perception, understanding and projection of the situation in the environment. SA is considered to be very important in decision-making for all kind of operators, including bridge officers. It will enable the possibility to understand if there is an impact on situation awareness by different lighting conditions. This has been done with senior students from the Master Mariner Programme at Chalmers. Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) was used to measure situation awareness of the participants in a navigation simulator. The results pointed out demonstrated a difference in situation awareness between the participants. The study concluded that those who sailed during lighted conditions showed a higher situation awareness.
