This project is made in collaboration with Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) which is the national facility of radio astronomy. OSO plays a critical role in research projects across the country by providing the necessary equipment to study the earth and the universe and serves as a central hub where scientists and engineers in radio astronomy and geosciences can gather and conduct their studies. In the year of 2019, OSO began their work with a new investment in the form of a visitor center, with the purpose of creating a space for the public to explore the universe and planet earth. Following a grand opening event in September 2022, the visitor center was opened to visitors. The purpose of this project was to gather information that would act as a basis for the design of the exhibition center's "dark room", which is still under development. The purpose of the study was to investigate what requirements and what type of cognitive stimuli that should be considered when designing an exhibit. This should then be visualized in a 3D model. To collect data for the basis of the project, interviews were conducted with guides and pedagogues from the national science center Universeum located in Gothenburg, Sweden. The interview subjects also contained teachers active in middle school. To obtain relevant information and knowledge for the design of the exhibition space, observations of existing exhibitions. All this information was then formed into a requirements list. This was analyzed and resulted in a finished concept and a 3D model that was then tested against the requirements. The finished concept includes a problem-solving activity with the purpose of creating an interactive experience that encourages visitors to engage and participate in the exhibition. With the combination of image, sound and light the dark room recreates the environment of different planets and moons and creates the illusion of being in another place. Together with the environment the visitors get to solve puzzles and look for clues to discover new places in the universe and figure out where they are.
