On the first of January 2015 new stricter rules regarding Sulphur emission came into force. In Swedish waters the maximum allowed content of Sulphur in the fuel was reduced from 1 % to 0.1 %, which has led to big changes in the shipping industry. Sulphur oxide is noxious to both humans and nature. The European Union, EU, has by reforms gradually increased the requirement regarding Sulphur emissions. EU has adopted reforms written by International Maritime Organization, IMO. This thesis is a qualitative study where a group of shipping companies have responded to a questionnaire. The companies were contacted through phone. The vessels participating in this study are ferries with a minimum length of 140 meter and all of them continuously operating in Swedish waters. The main question of the study is: “What have the companies done to meet the new requirements of Sulphur emissions?” Before 2015 all of the approached companies used heavy fuel oil as propulsion fuel on their ferries. Since the turn of the year the situation has changed drastically. The study proves that most of the companies, at least temporary have complied with the new rules by changing fuel. Although the companies have complied with the requirements, they have different visions of future fuel. Great interest is shown in fuels such as methanol and liquefied natural gas, LNG. In the end of 2014, the price for the four most common fuels used aboard ships, was reduced by almost half of its former price. The low fuel price might be a big reason to why alternative fuels such as LNG and methanol are still just a vision. If the fuel price for distillate fuels would have been higher, could the result have been any different?
