dc.description.abstract | This thesis explores the design of a Human Machine Interface for digital displays in yachts, with a focus on enhancing usability, safety, and user experience. Conducted in collaboration with Volvo Penta, the project responds to the increasing digitalization in the boating industry and the associated cognitive demands placed on operators. Grounded in theories about usability and guided by Wicken’s model of human information processing, the study combines theoretical research, user interviews, observations, surveys, and benchmarking to understand user needs. The findings informed the design of a user-centered interface incorporating features such as personalized profiles, system status summaries, context-dependent views, trip summaries, and a tiered warning system. Emphasis was placed on intuitive navigation, visual clarity, and reducing cognitive load during critical tasks. The final outcome is a high-fidelity prototype compatible with multiple platform solutions. This study contributes to Volvo Penta’s vision of delivering seamless, safe, and enjoyable marine experiences through innovative digital solutions. | |
